Amazon bills themselves as the world's largest bookstore. It's certainly convenient; you can search for books by title, author, subject or ISBN. Many books are discounted and many are shipped to your door in two days. If you don't want to enter a credit card number online, you can save the order info and call Amazon using a toll-free number. I've found Amazon to have lots of the books I'm interested in, good service and reasonable prices, which is why I'm an Amazon Associate. Many of the books I recommend are routinely carried by Amazon and I have links which take you to the Amazon catalog page for such books, so that you may order a book online directly from Amazon. Some specialized Celtic studies books from Ireland and Wales are not available from Amazon, but they are available from Books for Scholars, Celtic Studies Publications, Amazon UK.com, or you can have your local independent book store special order them.
If you haven't used Amazon before, it's fun to use their convenient search feature to see what turns up. You can get an idea of the huge variety available from Amaxon by entering a few keywords in the box below, perhaps terms related to a particular subject, or your favorite author, or the title of that new best seller you've been meaning to read.
Amazon.co UK is the British branch of Amazon.com. They describe themselves as "the best site for personal service and fast worldwide delivery on 1.2 million titles--all British books in print." Celtic Studies Resources (this web site) is a branch member of Amazon UK, for two reasons, aside from their quality service. First, a number of British and European users have indicated that while they can use Amazon.com, it would be more convenient to use a bookstore closer to them, and one that can handle their local currency. Amazon UK.com allows users to pay by credit card and automatically converts the book prices from pounds sterling to most major currencies, including U.S. dollars. Secondly, many people prefer to order books online, and Amazon carries the scholarly titles from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Wales Press, the two central publishers of Medieval Irish and Welsh editions. Even U.S. customers may prefer to order imported books from Amazon UK.
Books for Scholars specializes in books for the Celtic scholar. They are absolutely wonderful. Their catalog is on the web site, and all the books are anootated. Just go there and look, and make a regular trip there, since they do keep up with Celtic publishing. Books are neatly divided into categories.
Three Geese in Flight Books has been selling antiquarian, used, and out-of-print Celtic and Arthurian studies books since 1976. They stock titles on the folklore, mythology and history of Celtic Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany, and specialize in the history, literature, fiction, and scholarly study of the Arthurian legend. They also feature Norse, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval studies books. You can search their current stock here.
Oxbow Books is a British bookseller specializing in classical and medieval scholarly texts in language, literature, history, archaeology and the arts. They have an American partner, David Brown Books, who publish a price list in U. S. dollars and sell the books in North America. The web site is as full of information as the catlogs; I often find out about new publications here before I see a review in an academic journal.
The Advanced Book Exchange is a cooperative of used bookstores, with a well-organized searchable and browseable site. Once you find a book you are interested in, you deal directly with the store that owns it.
